Local hopefuls Della Destiara Haris and Rizki Amelia Pradipta upstaged top seeds and World champions Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan in the second round of the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters in Jakarta yesterday.

Haris and Pradipta (featured image) were dominant from the start and the Chinese faded out mid-way in the opening game, losing the clash 21-15 21-11.

The Indonesians take on Lee So Hee/Shin Seung Chan, one of three Korean pairs in the quarter-finals; the others being Chae Yoo Jung/Kim Hye Rin and Chang Ye Na/Jung Kyung Eun.

Malaysia Masters winners Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl (Denmark) progressed with ease into the quarter-finals, where they face Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai.

In Men’s Doubles, India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty enjoyed a straight-games win to make the last-eight.

The Indian Men’s Doubles duo took just 32 minutes to overcome Chinese Taipei’s Liao Min Chun and Su Ching Heng, 21-17 21-16, to book a place against Danish fourth seeds Mads Conrad-Petersen/Mads Pieler Kolding. The Danes outplayed Malaysia’s Chooi Kah Ming/Low Juan Shen 21-11 21-17.

In the lower half of the draw, Malaysia Masters runners-up Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong fought past French Open champions Lee Jhe-Huei/Lee Yang 21-15 16-21 21-13 to set up a clash with World champions Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan (China), who beat compatriots Lu Kai/Zheng Siwei 21-14 21-16.

In-form Viktor Axelsen, winner of last week’s Perodua Malaysia Masters, retired from his second round Men’s Singles match against Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai. In a Facebook post, Axelsen explained that his left ankle had started to hurt after a bad landing late in the first game.

Axelsen lost the close first game and was trailing Sakai 11-7 when he retired; the Japanese progressed into the quarter-finals where he faces another Dane, Rasmus Gemke, who beat Korea’s Jeon Hyeok Jin 23-21 21-15.

The other quarter-finals in the top half are Son Wan Ho (Korea) and Sony Dwi Kuncoro (Indonesia). Veteran Kuncoro beat compatriot Tommy Sugiarto 21-14 21-10, while Son held off Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei in a close battle 21-17 11-21 21-19.

Anthony Ginting was the only other Indonesian to make the quarter-finals after he comfortably handled the wares of Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen, conqueror of Lin Dan in the first round. Ginting faces China’s Chen Long in the quarter-finals.

New Chinese Mixed Doubles combination Zhang Nan/Liu Xuanxuan outplayed eighth seeds Mathias Christiansen/Christinna Pedersen 21-19 17-21 21-15 to earn a quarter-final against top seeds Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir (Indonesia).

Two other Indonesian pairs – Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti and Edy Saputra/Marsheilla Gischa Islami, also made the quarter-finals, where they face each other.

Malaysia Masters finalists Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong (China) and Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet (Hong Kong) run into each other; the bottom quarter will see an all-Malaysian clash between Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing and Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai.

There were no surprises in Women’s Singles, with all the seeds progressing.

India’s Saina Nehwal won her second straight match against Chinese opposition, with a 21-12 21-18 result over Chen Xiaoxin. Nehwal set up an interesting clash with compatriot Pusarla V Sindhu, who beat Malaysian qualifier Goh Jin Wei 21-12 21-9. The two Indians have played each other only twice in their career; the record stands at one win apiece.

In another quarter of the same half, current World champion Nozomi Okuhara (Japan) takes on former World champion Ratchanok Intanon (Thailand).
