Sergey Sirant recovered from a dire position to beat Chirag Sen and enter the quarterfinals of the Syed Modi India International 2022 in Lucknow on Thursday.

The Russian had lost the opening game and trailed 14-18, but levelled the deficit. Sen had match point at 20-19, which Sirant staved off, before finishing the match strongly in the third game.

In the quarterfinals he takes on India’s Mithun Manjunath, who beat Malaysia’s Soong Joo Ven in a thrilling third game.

Manjunath led 19-15 but Soong caught up with him and held two match points, before the Indian edged him, 16-21 21-16 23-21.

In the top quarter, Frenchman Arnaud Merkle takes on HS Prannoy, who overcame a strong challenge from countryman Priyangshu Rajawat, 21-11 16-21 21-18.

In women’s singles, Pusarla V Sindhu will have the opportunity to avenge her India Open loss to Supanida Katethong when she faces the Thai in the quarterfinals.

Pusarla overcame the challenge of USA’s Lauren Lam 21-16 21-13.

Other Highlights

♦In men’s doubles, second seeds Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov eased into the quarterfinals, where they face Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun.

♦Three Malaysian pairs are in the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles. Vivian Hoo/Lim Chiew Sien will face compatriots Low Yeen Yuan/Valeree Siow in the lower half of the draw, while another Malaysian pair, Anna Ching Yik Cheong/Teoh Mei Xing, face home duo Ramya Venkatesh Chickmenhalli/Apeksha Nayak in the top half.

♦In mixed doubles, eighth seeds William Villeger/Anne Tran overcame stiff resistance from Sri Lanka’s Sachin Dias/Thilini Hendahewa in the opening game to progress into the semifinals, 27-25 21-14.
