Swiss Open: Gritty Kidambi Thwarts Antonsen

Men’s singles second seed Anders Antonsen’s progress was stunted by an Indian shuttler for the second tournament running at the YONEX Swiss Open 2022 on Friday.

The world No.3, who last week lost in the YONEX All England Open 2022 last 16 to eventual runner-up Lakshya Sen, went out in the quarterfinals in Basel at the hands of seventh-seeded Kidambi Srikanth following a 79-minute battle.

The 19-21 21-19 20-22 loss is the Dane’s first to the former world No.1 since the World Championships in 2017.

Kidambi, who lifted the Swiss title in 2015, meets Jonatan Christie next after the Indonesian toiled to a 21-18 16-21 24-22 win over Frenchman Toma Junior Popov.

The other semifinal will also be India versus Indonesia following straight games wins for Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and 2016 champion Prannoy H. S. against Sameer Verma and Parupalli Kashyap.

Old rivals Indonesia and Malaysia will meet in both men’s doubles semifinals, with No.2 seeds Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik taking on 2019 winners Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin playing Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan.
