Unheralded Lin Chun Yi, who took down one higher-rated opponent after another this week at the PRINCESS SIRIVANNAVARI Thailand Masters 2023, completed his dream run by winning the final today.

The 23-year-old, ranked 35, outclassed an experienced opponent ranked 17 places above him, Ng Ka Long Angus, for his second HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 title after the US Open in 2019. Having surprised the likes of Weng Hong Yang, Kenta Nishimoto and Shi Yu Qi in previous rounds, Lin stayed composed in the final, and it was his opponent who made more errors.

“Today, my plan was to be patient and I tried to find a chance to attack him. I am very happy. I haven’t won a Super 300 title for long time. This is my second and it is very important for me.”

“I couldn’t play my best today,” said Angus. “Maybe after the semifinals yesterday my physical condition dropped. I couldn’t push the pace up.

“My opponent controlled the net well and his smash was very strong. I could only play defensive; I couldn’t do what I had prepared to do. When I had the lead, I couldn’t kill it and I let him get back into the match.”

Three Finals, Two Titles

Huang Dong Ping was in her third straight final in three weeks – the last two with new partner Feng Yang Zhe. Having conceded a walkover in the India Open final as then-partner Wang Yi Lyu fell ill, Huang then teamed up with Feng and won the DAIHATSU Indonesia Open last week. The unbeaten run continued, with Feng and Huang beating Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yu Jung 18-21 21-15 21-12.

Other Highlights

♦ Zhang Yi Man won the biggest title of her career, beating Han Yue in an all-Chinese women’s singles final. Zhang’s last title was the Vietnam Open 2019, a Super 100 event.

♦ Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin captured their second title in two weeks, beating Su Ching Heng/Ye Hong Wei 21-16 21-17.

♦ Thai sisters Benyapa Aimsaard/Nuntakarn Aimsaard celebrated their first home title as they blitzed Baek Ha Na/Lee So Hee 21-6 21-11.
