Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti made their first final on their return to the circuit since Jordan’s injury layoff, with a 54-minute semifinal win at the Madrid Spain Masters 2023.

Jordan had undergone back surgery last year and made his return in January 2023; the pair didn’t make it past the early rounds of their first four tournaments. Their last final before the injury had been the HYLO Open in November 2021.

The Indonesian mixed doubles pair, who were ranked as high as No.4 in October 2021 but have since fallen to No.47, overcame a gritty fightback by Mathias Thyrri/Amalie Magelund. The Danes saved three match points in the second game but their challenge fell away in the third with the Indonesians winning 21-15 22-24 21-12.

In the final Jordan/Oktavianti face another Danish pair, Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra BØje, straight games winners over Gregory Mairs/Jenny Moore. The Danes too haven’t been in a final for over a year – their last was in October 2021 when they were in the French Open title round.

There was more good news for Indonesia, with Gregoria Mariska Tunjung nixing Carolina Marin’s hopes on claiming her first Spain Masters title. Tunjung weathered a first game setback to beat Marin 10-21 21-15 21-10.

Another player on the road from an injury layoff, Pusarla V Sindhu, progressed to her first HSBC BWF World Tour final since the Singapore Open last July. The world No.11 won an exciting clash against Yeo Jia Min, 24-22 22-20.

Highlights

• The men’s singles final will be an all-Japan clash. Kanta Tsuneyama won one of the most exciting matches of the tournament with a 22-20 20-22 21-18 result over Anders Antonsen, while Kenta Nishimoto too was involved in a thriller against Toma Junior Popov, winning 23-21 in the third.
• The men’s doubles final will feature China’s He Ji Ting/Zhou Hao Dong against Chinese Taipei’s Lee Fang-Chih/Lee Fang-Jen.
• The all-China women’s doubles final will see two fresh pairs – Chen Fang Hui/Du Yue against Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning.
