It’s clear that Anthony Sinisuka Ginting loves the Singapore Open – the defending champion will contest his third consecutive final at the tournament today.

The Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist defeated Kodai Naraoka in last year’s final, having finished runner-up to Kento Momota at the previous edition in 2019. Ginting was also a semifinalist in 2017.

“I don’t know why but it just excites me to compete here,” the Indonesian revealed after his semifinal against Kunlavut Vitidsarn yesterday. “Everytime I play in Singapore, I get good vibes. It really has an effect on me and I end up giving my best performance. It feels like home away from home.”

On playing Anders Antonsen for the title, the world No.2 said: “We know each other’s game so well, it will be down to who adapts better to court conditions. I’m sure we will both prepare well. It will be an exciting match.”

Antonsen, who overcame Naraoka 19-21 21-16 21-17 in the other semifinal, won their most recent encounter in March, in the All England quarterfinals. The overall head-to-head however, favours Ginting 5-2.

If Ginting retains his title, he will become the first Indonesian in 50 years to be winner twice in a row. Ilie Sumirat accomplished it in 1972-1973.

Men’s singles is also the longest category at the competition not to witness a holder defend his crown. Chen Hong was the last (2002-2003).
