Another fiery attacking performance by Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan saw them through to their first HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 final at the YONEX French Open 2024 on Saturday.

The world No.16 pair, winners at the German Open last Sunday, continued their stunning journey in Paris in taking down one higher-ranked opponent after another. In the semifinals it was the turn of sixth seeds Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi to feel the heat, as the big-hitting Chinese Taipei duo overturned a 19-13 deficit in the second game to close out the match in two.

“We never expected to make back-to-back finals,” said Lee Jhe-Huei, winner of the title in 2017 with a different partner, Lee Yang.

“We kept working on our mistakes. I felt they were nervous. The quality on the shots and the speed weren’t that high. We wanted to ensure our own quality was good. My first Superseries title was the French Open (in 2017). And now our first big final is the French Open, so it feels incredible.”

Sunday will see them against the world’s best pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty, who made their fourth consecutive final. The Indians avenged their recent India Open loss to world champions Kang Min Hyuk/Seo Seung Jae 21-13 21-16.

Other Highlights

Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo’s dream run came to an end in the semifinals, but the Indonesian was combative against Shi Yu Qi, fighting all the way in a 21-19 21-14 loss.

Shi’s opponent will be world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who made his first final since winning the world title last August. Vitidsarn came through in three games against Lakshya Sen, 20-22 21-13 21-11.

The women’s doubles final will see world champions Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan looking for their first French Open title since 2016 when they take on Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida.
